Don’t look for school to be back just yet because summer is just starting. Before you start counting the days, here a some suggestions on how you can kill your kid’s boredom without spending too much money.
1. Take the kids to a factory tour. There are a number of factories around the country that allow kids to tour around at a low cost, if not for free. According to FactoryToursUSA.com, there are about 570 factories that allow tours. Find the one closest to you. But before you go, do not forget to check on the details about the availability of the facilities for your tour. Some factories may have certain restrictions.
2. A trip to a historic location may interest the kids. This is the best way to bring life to the historic sites the kids read about in school. On top of the list may include birthplaces of known personalities, or museums that display some of the most memorable relic pieces of old. This suggestion may come for free, save for some fees that the historic site managers might charge.
3. Enroll the kids in a summer reading program. You can check with your local library to find out if a summer reading program is coming. Your ids can get excited about the rewards they can get from the program. In one local library for instance, the goal was to get each kid read 1,000 books. For every 100 books they read, they get a reward. They will have a party once they reach the 1,000 mark. Aside from having fun, your children will get to continue through a literacy program away from regular school.
4. Find the kids some fun and free things to do online. As a kid, I look forward to the Mini Page in the Saturday paper. The Mini Page has something in it that gets me hooked for more than an hour. Now, Mini Page is accessible online. They will surely have the same fun, and the same amount of learning materials that most of us enjoyed when we were kids.
5. There are more educational activities online than you. Although this is the least appealing on this list (thinking that the kids have just been “freed” from school), some kids really enjoy doing school stuff online. For instance, there are video-based lessons that help kids who are weak in Math. These materials provide a “game” feeling while providing the kids with enough learning materials to improve on their weaknesses.
