There are several causes to upside down car loans including:
- Paying too much for a new car
- Paying little to no down payment on a new car or even a secondhand car
- Rolling over a balance from a car with an upside down value
- Paying for the car loan over 72 months
- Having a high interest rate on the car loan, usually because of negative credit
- Buying a high depreciation car
