- False property. The so-called landlord milks as much money, such as security deposit, advances, and charges, from the renter and then vanishes with the money.
- Help a friend. The scammer/supposed landlord pretend to help out a friend or relative by looking for tenants, collect the money, and then never come back. The property may likely have been broken into by the scammer, which will put your at risk for trespassing charges, too.
- Foreign rental scams. This involves the supposed landlord posting bogus online ads for the rental property, asking the tenants for deposit, and vanishing with the money. The tenants, however, did not take the time to actually visit the property, ask about it from reputable sources, and looking for proof of legitimacy.
