Lately, Facebook has trod into the path of extreme popularity. Aside from social functions, Facebook is also used for advertising products and services and hiring employees. There are legitimate advertisements but there are some who take advantage of naive users.
We should all be aware that protection from identity theft on social media platforms like Facebook begins at home. We should teach our children to beware of posers who will say and do anything to lure them to give their personal information. ID thieves would try to engage the victim into clever conversations to make him think that he is having a game review, an online interview or just random talk. Although the youngsters are vulnerable, they are not totally helpless. Here are some tips.
1. Don’t give away personal information to strangers. Thieves use techniques that can open private messages to find vital information. Teach the kids to think before answering questions.
2. Sort the emails, especially if the Facebook account is used for personal emails. Hackers can use the links to track personal information. Do not click the links that come with unsolicited emails.
3. Be realistic. Anything offered on Facebook that seems too good to be true is not really true, these are the ones that should be turned down at once.
4. Edit and modify personal settings once in a while. Anything that seems to give away personal information should be deleted.
Facebook is helpful. But be careful how you use it. Be safe.
